I read Joe’s entry for the song where John says there’s nothing to the lyrics in this song; he was just trying to write a three part harmony song in the style of Smokey Robinson. But, I can’t help but think about the lyrics. It’s what I do.
That boy took my love away
Oh, he’ll regret it somedayThis Boy wouldn’t mind the pain
Would always feel the same
If This Boy gets you back again
Those lines makes me think of You Really Got A Hold On Me which Smokey Robinson sang.
I don’t like you but I love you
Seems that I’m always thinking of you
Oh ho ho, you treat me badly
I love you madly, you’ve really got a hold on me
Both of those have the same vibe as Girl. There is a girl who gives you pain, but you don’t mind because you want her so badly.
Why will that boy regret it someday? The tone of the song doesn’t seem like the singer is going to go after “that boy” and make him pay for taking the girl from him. It sounds like the girl will end up making him wish he had never laid eyes on her.

Offline I thought it was from Living in the Material World, the Scorcese documentary, but I’ll bet one of our historians would be all over this question.
I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

Offline Its not the ‘Anthology’. If anything i’d go with Georgie Wood and say ‘Living In The Material World ‘. The clip itself is from 1976, some folk online saying around the time George was on ‘Saturday Night Live’.

Offline Now, don’t quote me on any of this, I may be misremembering parts of, or all.
It definitely comes from 1976, and I think was filmed at Warner Brothers in Los Angeles.
The Beatles’ contract with EMI was expiring, and there was some talk that maybe the time was right to release Neil’s The Long and Winding documentary (which eventually became the basis of Anthology). I believe this is George watching the current cut of that.

The Fab Four had 15 full run-throughs of This Boy , but the middle eight featured Harrison’s guitar solo.
but cannot be true as we have takes 4 and 13 with John’s middle eight, plus we know takes 4 and 12 break down. I’m not disputing George’s guitar solo being ditched just the details put forward are here are complete bollocks and could have been checked with a little effort.

Offline The middle eight of this song reminds me of Yes It Is . Both have powerful lyrics with an emotionally driven vocal performance from John where he sounds so pained and sorrowful. Every once in a while he sneaks up on me and floors me with a vocal performance that I forgot existed. In my opinion he’s the greatest voice in all of rock n roll.
